Elected Officials

The government of the city consists of a legislative branch
comprised of five elected commissioners and an executive branch consisting of an elected mayor.

The city commission is composed of three members elected from wards and two members elected at-large. Ward representatives must reside in their wards. At-large members may live anywhere in the city. All commissioners represent all citizens of the city regardless of their ward or at-large status.

The commission has the power to enact such ordinances, resolutions and policies as it shall deem necessary to carry out the functions and services of the city.

The mayor serves as the chief executive officer of the city. He
carries out policies enacted by the commission and coordinates
the work of all city departments.

He serves as the chairman of
the city commission and presides at meetings. He may take part in
discussions, but may not make or second a motion, or vote on any
motion. The mayor has the authority to veto any ordinance or
resolution of the commission.

Elections are held in November of even-numbered years to coincide
with statewide general elections. The election of commissioners is staggered such that the at-large commissioners are not elected in the same general election as the ward commissioners. The mayor and each commissioner are elected for a
term of four years.

Workshop and regular City Commission meetings are held on the first and third Monday of every month at 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
respectively. Meetings are held at city hall, located at 516 8th
Avenue West in Palmetto.

For information on meetings and agenda items, call the city
clerk's office at 941-723-4570.
The charter, the agendas and meeting minutes are all available on the city's web site located at www.palmettofl.org.
